Airbus is moving its Wing of Tomorrow programme from ground prototypes to flight-test hardware. Over the next three years, it will design and build full-scale wing extensions for an A321neo, then test them in Toulouse to measure aerodynamics, drag reduction and handling as it pushes toward longer, thinner wings for future single-aisle aircraft. The extensions, each about four to five metres, will initially be fixed articles that mimic a fully extended folding-wing shape in cruise. Airbus is using the campaign to de-risk the next narrowbody wing architecture and sharpen the efficiency gains targeted for its 2030s successor programme.
