Bundeswehr Deploys Three Helicopters for Müritz National Park Wildfire

The Bundeswehr deployed three helicopters on 16 July 2026 to combat a 320-hectare wildfire in Müritz National Park, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, following an official assistance request from the local district. Two CH-53 heavy transport helicopters from Helicopter Wing 64 each carry 5,000-liter external water tanks to drench the evacuated village of Granzin and prevent fire spread to the Berlin-Rostock railway line. A third, smaller helicopter supports the operation, marking the first simultaneous use of three Bundeswehr aircraft in this incident. Ground crews cannot access the area due to buried munitions, making aerial water delivery the only viable suppression method. The operation operates under Article 35 of the German Basic Law, with civil authorities retaining command while the Bundeswehr provides technical support.
