Swedish JAS 39 Gripens spent more than four hours patrolling and escorting aircraft over Poland, supported by an Airbus A330 MRTT from NATO’s multinational tanker fleet. Poland’s General Staff disclosed the operation on 3 November. The number of Swedish fighters involved was not made public, and no interception or airspace violation was reported in connection with the patrol.
The sortie took place during a Russian attack on Ukraine, amid concern about risks to Polish airspace. The tanker, identified as AA-332/MMF19, provided aerial refuelling support; details of its crew’s nationality were not disclosed.
The patrol formed part of Sweden’s two-month contribution to NATO air and missile defence, which began on 1 October. The mission also aims to help protect support flows to Ukraine. Swedish aircraft operate mainly from Sweden, with a smaller forward presence in Poland, under the control of NATO’s Combined Air Operations Centre in Uedem, Germany.
