ITA Airways is scheduled to operate the opening flight of Pope Leo XIV’s South American journey from Rome-Fiumicino to Montevideo on 6 November, using an Airbus A330-900neo. The nonstop service is due to depart at 07:00 and reach Carrasco airport at 16:30 local time after about 13.5 hours. The Pope, his delegation and travelling journalists will be aboard for the first leg of a visit to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru running until 17 November.
The Rome–Montevideo flight is a special operation: Montevideo is not part of ITA’s scheduled network. The reported crew comprises three pilots and ten cabin crew, supported by the airline’s special-flights team. ITA chief executive and general manager Joerg Eberhart is expected to welcome the Pope at Fiumicino.
Other carriers are set to operate subsequent stages of the itinerary. Aerolíneas Argentinas is to cover several flights in Argentina and Uruguay, while LATAM is scheduled to operate flights within Peru and the return to Rome. The Vatican programme confirms the departure and arrival times for the first leg; the aircraft assignment and crew details have been reported by aviation media.
