Lufthansa Group leaves airBaltic’s summer 2027 deployment uncertain

Lufthansa Group has not confirmed how many airBaltic aircraft, if any, it will use in summer 2027, although it plans to continue working with the Latvian carrier. The group says airBaltic has confirmed it can provide the agreed capacity, but it declined to discuss contract details. The uncertainty comes as Swiss and Brussels Airlines plan to stop using airBaltic aircraft, while Austrian Airlines says it remains contractually connected to the airline.

Swiss will end its cooperation with airBaltic after the 2026/27 winter timetable. It plans to use four of the Latvian airline’s A220-300s this winter, down from ten in summer 2026. Swiss expects improved availability of its own aircraft and crews to let it operate more flights itself; it has said the decision is unrelated to airBaltic’s financial position. Brussels Airlines also plans to operate without airBaltic in summer 2027. Lufthansa Airlines did not use the carrier’s aircraft in summer 2026 or during the current winter timetable.

Austrian Airlines, which used six airBaltic A220s in summer 2026, has not disclosed whether or how many it expects to deploy next summer. The group’s overall allocation remains unclear despite its 10% stake in airBaltic and position as the carrier’s largest wet-lease customer. AirBaltic filed for Chapter 11 protection in the United States in September and is restructuring. Across Swiss, Brussels Airlines and Austrian Airlines, 20 of its A220-300s operated under wet lease in summer 2026.
