Drone alert restricts flights at three Moscow-area airports

Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency imposed temporary flight restrictions at Vnukovo, Domodedovo and Zhukovsky during overnight drone activity on 28–29 October. The limits at Zhukovsky had been lifted by the time of reporting, while restrictions remained at Vnukovo and Domodedovo. Two flights from Istanbul to Moscow turned back because of the measures at Vnukovo. Sheremetyevo was not listed among the airports affected in this incident.

Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin claimed that 613 drones had been directed towards the capital overnight, with 231 downed as they approached Moscow. Those figures could not be independently verified. The restrictions disrupted flights bound for the region while authorities responded to the reported activity.

The incident followed repeated aviation disruption around Moscow during October. On 23 October, all four major airports serving the region were affected in a separate episode. In this latest case, restrictions applied to three facilities, with the status of operations differing by airport at the time of reporting.
