Upgraded Collins Radio Altimeters Meet FAA 5G Standards

Collins Aerospace has upgraded its radio-altimeter configurations to meet new Federal Aviation Administration performance standards for tolerance to 5G interference, providing operators with a potential compliance path for affected aircraft. Collins-authorised service centres are expected to begin offering the retrofit work in 2027, ahead of phased FAA deadlines for aircraft operating in US airspace.

The FAA’s requirements address the risk that wireless signals in spectrum adjacent to radio-altimeter frequencies could affect altitude data used by pilots and aircraft safety systems during low-altitude operations. The rule applies to aircraft equipped with radio altimeters and establishes minimum performance requirements rather than mandating a specific manufacturer or product.

Aircraft operating under Part 121, together with certain larger aircraft operated under Part 129, must comply by 30 December 2030. Most other affected aircraft, including those covered by Part 91 and several other operating categories, have until 31 October 2034. Compliance may involve an equipment upgrade, replacement or a more extensive aircraft modification, depending on the existing installation.

The Collins retrofit programme is intended for aircraft already equipped with the company’s radio altimeters. Details on eligible aircraft models, part numbers, certification arrangements, installation times and costs have not been disclosed.
