United removes Mossallam from flight duty as October 7 posts draw renewed scrutiny

United Airlines has again withheld Captain Ibrahim R. Mossallam from flight duty while it conducts an internal review, following renewed attention on his social media comments about the Hamas attack on Israel on 7 October 2023. The pilot, who has been described in reporting as Newark-based, was first removed from service with pay in 2023 and later returned to flying, but his status has now changed again as United reassesses the case.

United has not publicly detailed what triggered the latest review. The renewed action follows scrutiny over posts attributed to Mossallam in which he described the Hamas assault as “resistance by a brave people” and said it was “not unprovoked”. Reporting in recent days has also conflicted on whether he had continued flying immediately before the latest removal, although United’s current position is clear: he is withheld from service pending an ongoing review.

The case has prompted wider questions about airline oversight of pilot conduct, especially when social media activity intersects with safety-critical roles and public trust. It also highlights the reputational risk carriers face when earlier personnel decisions are revisited after new reporting or renewed public attention. United has not disclosed the outcome of its earlier review or whether the latest action could lead to any further disciplinary step.
