Ukraine’s Air Force plans to move to wing-style aviation units and multi-purpose air bases as part of a development strategy extending to 2035. The model would replace infrastructure organised around individual aircraft types with facilities able to accommodate and service different combat aircraft. Yurii Ihnat, head of communications for the Air Force Command, cited Ivano-Frankivsk, where support infrastructure is currently geared mainly to the MiG-29.
The strategy covers the Air Force’s future organisational structure, weapons and operating model after the war. The planned bases would be developed at operational airfields used during the conflict. No detailed implementation schedule or list of airfields for conversion has been published.
One organisational step is already visible: a Facebook page has been launched for the 107th F-16 Wing. The Air Force has not provided further details on the unit’s role or the timing of additional wing formations.
The proposed changes would move Ukrainian military aviation away from arrangements inherited from the Soviet-era force structure and towards practices aligned with NATO. A more flexible base network is intended to support a fleet comprising different aircraft types, rather than tying each location’s maintenance and operations to a single model.
