TSB says helicopter loss-of-visual-reference accidents are far more common than in airplanes

Canada’s Transportation Safety Board has found that accidents involving loss of visual reference are more than twice as likely to involve helicopters as airplanes, based on Canadian accident data from 2000 to 2021. The finding is tied to the fatal helicopter crash near Fort Chipewyan, Alberta, and is being used to press for stronger pilot training, better onboard technology and clearer procedures for inadvertent flight into instrument meteorological conditions.

The board’s analysis puts loss-of-visual-reference events at 3.38% of helicopter accidents, compared with 1.55% for airplanes. In practice, the risk is linked to IIMC, when pilots suddenly lose outside visual cues and must recover using instruments alone.

The Fort Chipewyan case involved a Bell 206L operated by Hanley Heli Service, which struck the frozen surface of Lake Athabasca after an abrupt deterioration in weather. The TSB has argued that helicopter operators should not depend on pilots staying in the right weather and wants them to ensure crews have an acceptable level of protection against IIMC accidents.

The safety board’s recommendations could affect training standards, operating procedures and equipment expectations across Canada’s helicopter sector, particularly for reduced-visibility operations in remote areas.
