Discover Airlines has placed its first Airbus aircraft equipped with AeroSHARK surface technology into scheduled passenger service. The Lufthansa Group leisure carrier is operating the Airbus A330-300, registered D-AIKP, following modification at Dresden Airport. The aircraft entered regular operations last week, making Discover Airlines the first reported airline to operate an Airbus fitted with the sharkskin-inspired technology on scheduled flights.
AeroSHARK consists of a ribbed film modelled on the microscopic structure of sharkskin. Applied to the A330’s fuselage and engine nacelles in late August, the film is designed to reduce aerodynamic drag. The aircraft completed several test flights before entering passenger service as part of the certification and operational validation process.
The technology is expected to reduce fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions by around 1%. That figure remains a projection; no operational performance data from the aircraft’s initial service period has been disclosed.
The deployment provides a relatively low-disruption efficiency retrofit for a widebody aircraft, allowing aerodynamic improvements without replacing the airframe. The available information does not identify the aircraft’s routes, specify the date of its first commercial flight, disclose the film’s total coverage area or confirm whether Discover Airlines intends to modify additional aircraft.
