Spirit Airlines’ flight attendants’ union has objected to Google’s planned $10 million purchase of the bankrupt carrier’s internal business data, delaying a U.S. bankruptcy court hearing on the transaction to 9 September. The material at issue includes employee emails, Microsoft Teams messages, spreadsheets, calendars and other operational records that Google wants to use for product development and AI model training.
The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, which represents Spirit cabin crew, has raised privacy concerns over employee-related files and the risk that de-identified information could still be pieced together across linked datasets. Spirit has maintained that the records would be scrubbed of customer information and personally identifiable data before transfer. The sale remains subject to bankruptcy-court approval and is not yet final.
