Spain Navy to receive first MH-60R helicopter before year-end

Spain’s Navy is set to receive its first MH-60R Seahawk before the end of 2026, as Madrid moves to support the new fleet with a logistical, technical and engineering contract worth 17.54 million euros. The Council of Ministers approved the support package on 29 September, signalling that the helicopter programme is entering its operational phase and that the first aircraft delivery is imminent.

The MH-60R order covers eight helicopters for the Armada and is designed to replace the ageing SH-60B fleet. The type is configured for antisubmarine and antisurface warfare, along with maritime surveillance and other naval missions, giving the Navy a more capable rotary-wing platform for fleet operations. Recent reporting placed the first delivery in October, while Navy chief Admiral Antonio Piñeiro has indicated that the aircraft should arrive before year-end.

The support contract is intended to provide the technological updates and technical assistance needed to keep the helicopters available for service from the outset. The timing also suggests that sustainment planning is now aligned with the delivery schedule, even though the exact handover date and location have not been disclosed.
