Phoenix airports are evaluating Honeywell Aerospace’s SURF-A surface alert technology for use on airport ground vehicles in a trial involving the City of Phoenix Aviation Department. The project centres on testing collision-prevention tools in operational areas at Phoenix Sky Harbor and other airport facilities, rather than moving straight to a fleetwide rollout.
The review reflects growing interest in safety systems designed to reduce runway and taxiway incursions by vehicles operating airside. Honeywell and Phoenix are planning to test vehicles fitted with the technology under the agreement, which places the focus on practical use in day-to-day airport operations. The initiative also extends the assessment beyond aircraft to ground support equipment, where visibility and situational awareness can be limited.
The effort fits a wider industry push to adopt collision-avoidance and alerting systems in complex airport environments. For Phoenix, the trial offers a chance to assess how SURF-A performs in local operating conditions, while for Honeywell it provides a live test case for a safety product aimed at airport vehicles. No procurement or deployment decision has been established.
