NTSB begins on-site investigation of fatal Florida Learjet 60 crash

The US National Transportation Safety Board has begun its on-site investigation of a Learjet 60 crash in Lake Worth Beach, Florida, on 1 November. The aircraft, operated by Aurora Aviation, doing business as Upper Jet, was flying from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas. At a briefing the following day, investigators reported preliminary evidence of a possible in-flight breakup, but did not identify a cause.

The debris field spans roughly half a mile by four-tenths of a mile across ball fields, businesses and homes. Investigator-in-charge Timothy Monville said recovering major wreckage from the impact crater would be a significant challenge, and that work at the site was expected to take several days.

The NTSB has not determined a probable cause. Its investigation remains ongoing, and information released so far is preliminary and subject to change.
