The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau has linked the 23 July runway overrun involving Enugu Air Flight 4264 at Oba Akenzua II Airport in Benin, Nigeria, to multiple operational and infrastructure factors. The Embraer E170 left Runway 05 after landing with the autobrake unavailable, forcing manual braking as the aircraft rolled into the unpaved area beyond the runway end.
All 68 people on board survived without injury, but the aircraft was substantially damaged after striking approach lights and concrete structures beyond the runway. The preliminary findings also point to a wet runway, reduced visibility, a tailwind component and missing runway-condition information during landing clearance.
NSIB identified further airport-side issues, including an unserviceable weather-information display in the control tower and restricted visibility to the runway end because of an unfinished building. The bureau issued immediate safety recommendations while stressing that the investigation remains open and no final cause has been determined.
