Matthias Spohr will take over as chief operating officer of Eurowings on 1 October, joining the airline’s three-person top management team as it oversees a fleet of about 100 aircraft and roughly 5,500 employees. He succeeds Edi Wolfensberger, who is moving to Edelweiss as chief executive.
Spohr is returning to familiar ground after serving as managing director of Lufthansa Aviation Training. He previously headed Eurowings Deutschland’s flight operations from 2015 to 2021 and will now be responsible for flight operations, crew and ground processes, aircraft maintenance, safety and pilot training.
The move keeps the airline’s operational leadership within the Lufthansa Group circle at a time when Eurowings is managing a sizeable short-haul network and complex day-to-day operations. Spohr will work alongside chief executive Max Kownatzki and finance chief Kai Duve in the carrier’s executive team.
