Malaysia Aviation Group has started mandatory drug screening for all 1,260 Malaysia Airlines pilots after the arrest of one of its pilots in Indonesia on suspicion of drug smuggling. The first phase is due to finish by 15 August, and pilots who miss the deadline will be barred from flying until they clear company and regulatory checks.
The screening programme goes beyond existing random testing and is set to expand to all active pilots and cabin crew. In parallel, Malaysia’s Civil Aviation Authority has ordered all Malaysian airlines to test active flight crew and cabin crew within 30 days under approved alcohol and drug testing programmes.
The move follows heightened scrutiny of safety controls and public trust after the Indonesian arrest triggered internal reviews and wider action across the country’s aviation sector. Malaysia-based carriers have begun stepping up drug and alcohol screening as regulators tighten oversight of operational fitness standards.
