Luftwaffe Establishes Second Training Battalion at Fürstenfeldbruck Fliegerhorst

The German Airwaffe will establish its second training battalion (LwAusbBtl 2) at the Fürstenfeldbruck Fliegerhorst near Munich, effective 1 October 2026, reversing the planned 2030 withdrawal[3][13]. Up to 600 personnel will conduct basic training in the historic Kilometerbau, supplementing the existing battalion in Germersheim which becomes LwAusbBtl 1[1][3]. The decision aligns with the Bundeswehr expansion target of 260,000 active soldiers by 2035 and reflects a strategic shift to retain military real estate amid heightened security demands[3][6]. Three training companies and the battalion staff will operate from Fürstenfeldbruck, while two additional companies are stationed at Lagerlechfeld/Untermeitingen[3]. This move permanently restricts the city’s prior conversion plans for residential and commercial development on the 200-hectare site[2][4].
