Lufthansa is moving closer to adding two Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners originally built for LOT Polish Airlines, with the aircraft now carrying German registrations and Lufthansa names as preparation for entry into service. The jets, registered as D-ABQF Ingolstadt and D-ABQG Wolfsburg, are slated for the airline’s long-haul fleet and are expected to receive the Allegris cabin product.
The aircraft were built for LOT before the Polish carrier changed its order plans after the pandemic and ultimately declined the final two jets. They were then stored for an extended period before reappearing in Lufthansa colours, giving the German carrier a quicker route to additional widebody capacity than waiting for new-production slots.
The move also fits Lufthansa’s wider long-haul cabin strategy. Allegris is being rolled out across newer widebody types, and the 787-9s add to that programme rather than serving only as extra seats in the fleet. The aircraft’s prior association with LOT registrations SP-LSI and SP-LSH underscores how the delivery has shifted from a postponed handover to a near-term fleet addition for Lufthansa.
