Lufthansa flight diverted to Lyon after power bank fire on board

Lufthansa diverted flight LH1170 from Frankfurt to Lisbon to Lyon after a passenger’s power bank caught fire in the cabin. The Airbus A321-200 landed safely in France with 198 passengers and six crew members on board, and no injuries were reported.

Crew members secured the burning battery in a lithium safety bag before the pilots chose the diversion as a precaution and declared an emergency to obtain landing priority. The aircraft did not continue to Lisbon that night because Lyon’s night-flight restrictions prevented a same-evening onward departure.

Passengers were accommodated in hotels and rebooked onto alternative flights the following day. The incident adds to persistent concerns over lithium battery fires in flight, a risk that continues to drive diversion decisions and operational disruption across the industry.
