Lufthansa diverted an Airbus A321 operating flight LH1170 from Frankfurt to Lisbon to Lyon after a passenger’s power bank caught fire near a seat. The aircraft landed safely, with 198 passengers and six crew on board, and no injuries were reported.
Cabin crew secured the burning device in a lithium-safe bag before the cockpit crew declared an emergency to obtain priority landing. Lufthansa arranged hotel accommodation for all passengers and crew in Lyon, with onward travel rebooked for the following day.
The incident comes after Lufthansa tightened its power bank policy in January 2026, banning the use and charging of power banks during flight while still allowing limited carriage in cabin baggage. The rules were introduced across the group’s network as airlines face heightened attention to lithium battery risks on board.
