A historic Douglas DC-8-52 abandoned in Manaus is being prepared for removal and transport to Timaru, New Zealand, where it will be preserved rather than scrapped. The aircraft, registered PP-TPC and once flown as a cargo jet by Brazil’s TCB, has been parked in the Amazon city for about two decades and is now scheduled for dismantling in Brazil before a specialist one-way move across the world.
Work on the airframe is expected to begin on 1 September, with arrival in Timaru on New Zealand’s South Island targeted for the end of the year. The jet will not return to flight; the plan is to disassemble it for historical preservation and restoration as a display aircraft. The move closes a long period of inactivity for the DC-8, which was still operating in Brazil in the early 2000s before being taken out of service and left in Manaus.
The transfer highlights the niche but active market for large legacy aircraft that still have heritage value. Instead of heading to a scrapyard, the DC-8 will undergo a specialist logistics operation designed to save the airframe for museum or exhibition use. Details of the New Zealand preservation partner and the final display timetable have not been fully disclosed.
