GE Aerospace has moved hybrid-electric propulsion into commercial-cruise territory with a Saab 340B test bed that flew above 30,000 feet and then appeared at Farnborough for public display. The campaign combined NASA’s EPFD work with BETA Technologies’ systems integration and ferry role, Boeing’s Aurora-built nacelle, and BAE Systems batteries, while GE paired a CT7 engine with electric motor-generators, power electronics and a battery pack in the right nacelle. The aircraft sustained hybrid-electric operation for more than two hours and crossed the Atlantic in hybrid mode on the ferry legs, giving the sector a cleaner data point on megawatt-class architectures for future transport platforms.
