A French Air and Space Force Mirage 2000D crashed near Rogéville in northeastern France at about 22:40 local time on 20 October while returning from a night-training mission. The aircraft, operated by Fighter Squadron 2/3 “Champagne” from Nancy-Ochey Air Base 133, carried two crew members. One body has been recovered, while the search continues for the second occupant.
The crew comprised a pilot undergoing training and an experienced navigator and weapons systems officer. The aircraft was conducting a routine mission and was not carrying weapons. Fog and severe nighttime conditions complicated aerial operations, prompting ground teams and drones to support the search in the area around Rogéville, approximately 25 km north of the base.
The recovered body had not yet been formally identified in the latest available information. French authorities have not established whether the second crew member ejected or survived. Aviation-safety and judicial investigations have been opened to determine the circumstances and cause of the crash.
The Mirage 2000D is a two-seat, air-to-ground variant that entered French service in 1993. The type remains part of France’s operational strike-aircraft fleet and has previously been involved in both fatal and non-fatal accidents, including a fatal crash in 2019 and an accident near Nancy in 2021.
