Fraport secures €8.7 million for low-emission ground infrastructure at Frankfurt

Fraport will receive approximately €8.7 million in German federal funding to expand emissions-reducing ground-service infrastructure at Frankfurt Airport. Around €8.5 million will support pre-conditioned-air systems for 18 aircraft parking positions in Terminal 1’s Concourse A, while €227,000 will fund two additional mobile battery-electric ground power units. The projects will help reduce aircraft auxiliary-engine use and replace diesel-powered ground equipment.

Two of the 18 Concourse A positions already have pre-conditioned-air systems. Installation at the remaining positions is scheduled for completion by 2029. The systems provide conditioned air directly to parked aircraft, reducing the need to operate fuel-burning auxiliary power units for cabin heating and cooling.

The two additional battery-electric GPUs will increase Fraport’s fleet to 18 units, with 22 planned by 2029. They will be used where fixed 400-Hz ground-power connections cannot be installed. Fraport aims to equip all 252 aircraft parking positions at Frankfurt with either fixed ground power or mobile battery-electric GPUs by 2030.

The projects are supported through Germany’s Ground Power Directive, coordinated by NOW GmbH, and form part of Fraport’s Net Zero Master Plan. The airport operator targets annual greenhouse-gas emissions of 50,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent at Frankfurt by 2030 and net-zero Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions at fully consolidated group locations worldwide by 2045.
