Italy’s A400M interest remains unconfirmed after UK-Italy talks

A document titled “Airbus A400M for Italy” was visible in photographs of recent talks in Sardinia between Royal Air Force Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Harv Smyth and Italian Air Force Chief of Staff General Conserva. The meeting covered bilateral air relations and potential cooperation in air mobility, but the document is not evidence of a procurement decision or confirmed negotiations.

Italy is seeking a future replacement for its C-130J transport fleet. The A400M and Embraer KC-390 have been mentioned as possible candidates, but Rome has issued no official confirmation, launched no tender and signed no contract. Any potential order size remains unknown.

The photographs provide a new indication following a June report of Italian interest that did not identify its sources. Italy initially planned to acquire 16 A400Ms, but withdrew from the programme in 2001, before the other partner nations signed the development agreement. A return to the aircraft would therefore introduce a new type into the Italian Air Force’s transport fleet.
