Fraport expects more efficient Frankfurt Terminal 1 operations in 2027

Fraport expects Frankfurt Airport’s Terminal 1 to operate more efficiently from summer 2027, after Condor transfers its operations to the newly opened Terminal 3. The move, planned for around April and reported for 13 April 2027, will separate the Lufthansa and Condor hubs between the airport’s northern and southern terminal areas, easing congestion at gates and on the apron.

Fraport operating board member Dietmar Focke described the current arrangement as not cost-optimal, with some aircraft positioned far from terminal facilities. Separating the two hub operations should improve gate utilisation and enable aircraft to be handled closer to the terminals.

Fraport also expects fewer personnel and bus movements at Terminal 1, with passengers more frequently boarding through passenger bridges. Condor is one of Frankfurt’s two largest users and has recently carried about 10 million passengers annually, a substantial proportion through the airport.

Terminal 1 has served as Frankfurt’s main terminal since 1972. Its Lufthansa A-Plus concourse, opened in 2012, extended the facility westwards by 800 metres and increased annual capacity by about six million passengers to roughly 40 million. Fraport is also working with Siemens Mobility to restore full Skyline people-mover capacity by summer 2027, with components being redesigned.
