Catania–Fontanarossa Airport in Sicily is set to resume arrivals and departures after the aviation alert for Mount Etna was downgraded from red to orange. Operator SAC planned to restart operations from 14:00 local time, while passengers were urged to confirm flight status with their airlines before heading to the airport.
The reopening follows several days of disruption linked to ash from the volcano, which forced repeated suspensions, diversions and widespread cancellations across Sicily and other airports. Even after the restart time, only two sectors were reopened and multiple services remained listed as cancelled or diverted.
The partial recovery matters for the summer travel peak, when Catania is one of Sicily’s main air gateways and handles heavy passenger flows. The airport’s return to service should ease pressure on regional connectivity, but the schedule remained unstable as airlines worked through the backlog caused by the Etna disruption.
