Canada receives first two F-35As as full purchase remains under review

Canada has received its first two Lockheed Martin CF-35A Lightning II fighters, beginning the Royal Canadian Air Force’s transition from the CF-188 Hornet. The aircraft were accepted at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona on 22 October and will remain in the United States for Canadian pilot training and transition activities rather than entering operational service in Canada.

The delivery advances Canada’s fighter-modernisation programme while domestic infrastructure is prepared. The first F-35As are expected to arrive in Canada in 2028, with initial operational capability planned for 2029–2030 and full operational capability targeted for 2032–2034.

The milestone comes as Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government reviews the planned acquisition of 88 aircraft. Ottawa is considering whether to proceed with the full order or establish a mixed fleet that could include Saab Gripen fighters. The two delivered aircraft therefore begin training and fleet transition but do not confirm the eventual size or composition of Canada’s fighter force.
