British Airways Chicago flight returns to Heathrow after technical issue

British Airways flight BA295 from London Heathrow to Chicago returned to Heathrow on Monday after a technical issue prompted an emergency descent over Ireland. The Boeing 777-200ER, registered G-VIIA, landed safely back at the London hub later the same day, with passengers disembarking normally.

Flight-tracking data showed the aircraft dropping rapidly from cruising altitude to around 9,000 feet before the crew turned back towards London. The aircraft then remained in the air for several hours while circling to burn fuel before its return landing, avoiding any reported injuries or damage on the ground.

The exact nature of the technical problem has not been disclosed. British Airways arranged onward travel for affected passengers, while the incident interrupted a long-haul transatlantic service shortly after departure and drew attention because of the steep mid-air descent and emergency response over Irish airspace.
