BER government airport cost could rise to 2.5 billion euros

The planned government airport at Berlin Brandenburg Airport could cost up to 2.5 billion euros, according to criticism from the Bund der Steuerzahler. The project at BER in Schönefeld has expanded far beyond its original scope and now covers a much larger site for the federal government’s flight unit and associated infrastructure.

The project has grown from an initial budget of several hundred million euros into a billion-euro undertaking, with the area reportedly increasing from about 30 hectares to nearly 60 hectares. Plans include staff buildings, hangars, security facilities, operations buildings, aircraft parking positions, taxiways and an underground fuelling system. The flight unit is expected to comprise around 1,170 military and civilian posts, linked to the planned full relocation from Cologne-Wahn to Schönefeld. The higher figure reflects criticism of the project’s scale and complexity rather than a confirmed final budget.
