BER abolishes evening noise surcharge

Flughafen Berlin-Brandenburg (FBB) is abolishing the additional noise surcharge for aircraft taking off or landing at BER between 22:00 and 23:59, while increasing standard noise charges by 10%. The change is intended to make late-evening operations more attractive and encourage airlines to deploy quieter aircraft as the airport faces declining passenger numbers and Ryanair’s withdrawal from Berlin.

The existing evening surcharge is graduated by time and ranges from 100% to 300% of the regular noise charge, regardless of an aircraft’s actual noise level. Under the revised system, standard charges will continue to reflect aircraft size and noise characteristics and will apply independently of the time of day. FBB considers this a stronger incentive for airlines to operate quieter aircraft than the previous blanket evening surcharge.

The surcharge has primarily affected carriers whose aircraft remain overnight at BER, including aircraft based at the airport or scheduled for early-morning departures to major hubs. More than 30 aircraft movements take place during the affected two-hour period on a typical evening.

Brandenburg’s responsible infrastructure ministry has approved the changes. The overnight flight ban from 00:00 to 05:00 remains unchanged, as does the 500% surcharge for movements during that restricted period. FBB has not yet specified when the new tariff schedule will take effect or provided revised euro amounts.
