Airports of Thailand (AOT) plans to double Suvarnabhumi Airport’s annual passenger capacity to 120 million under its fifth development plan. The proposals include a new terminal south of the airport and a fourth runway, each expected to take six to seven years to complete. AOT also plans an East Expansion project to enlarge check-in and baggage-handling areas, with procurement expected to begin in 2027.
Suvarnabhumi’s current stated capacity is about 60 million passengers a year: 45 million at the main terminal and 15 million at the SAT-1 satellite terminal. AOT president Paweena Jariyathitipong is preparing to submit the development plan and East Expansion project to the cabinet; neither has yet received cabinet approval.
The East Expansion’s terms of reference have been prepared. The four-year project is intended to accommodate at least 10 million passengers annually by expanding passenger-processing areas, including check-in counters and baggage conveyor systems. AOT has not provided separate capacity figures for the proposed southern terminal and fourth runway. The 120-million target depends on implementation of the wider development programme.
