American Airlines has introduced an app feature that monitors seat availability against customers’ preferences and automatically moves eligible AAdvantage members to a matching seat when one opens up. The tool is designed for single-passenger reservations with an assigned seat and is available up to 24 hours before departure.
The feature lets customers choose preferences such as window, aisle or middle after booking, reducing the need to repeatedly check the seat map before travel. Seat changes stay within the customer’s existing cabin and do not trigger extra charges. American will not move passengers into a higher-priced paid seat even if it matches their criteria.
The app also sends a notification when an automatic change is made. Preference controls remain with the customer, who can guide the settings used by the feature. The rollout details beyond publication day were not specified.
