airBaltic cancels Groningen-Tenerife route before launch

airBaltic has scrapped its planned Groningen Airport Eelde-Tenerife service before the first flight, ending a winter route that was due to begin in October. The weekly operation would have used an Airbus A220-300, but no flights will now run.

The cancellation comes as the Latvian carrier continues a major restructuring, reducing its fleet from 54 aircraft to 36 and closing its Tenerife base. Groningen Airport Eelde had regarded the destination as a useful addition to its network, particularly for winter leisure traffic, but the route has now been removed entirely. The move adds to airBaltic’s wider pullback from expansion plans as it concentrates capacity on a smaller set of services.
