Abra Group maps Latin America ESG strategy around growth and fragile ecosystems

Abra Group is aligning sustainability efforts across its Latin American airlines under a group-level ESG strategy that balances growth, connectivity and environmental protection. In an AeroTime interview published on Friday, chief corporate responsibility officer Maria Whitaker described a framework spanning operations in more than 27 countries, with measures ranging from fleet efficiency and carbon reduction to community programmes in ecologically sensitive areas, including Avianca’s transport links across the region.

Whitaker placed Latin America at the centre of the group’s approach, pointing to its role as a growth market and to the sensitivity of destinations such as San Andrés and other fragile ecosystems. Abra has supported the archipelago with voluntary transport for scientists and equipment, while also backing mangrove restoration with local communities. The group also repatriated more than 500 kilograms of confiscated seashells in 2025 so they could be returned to their natural environment.

The social side of the strategy leans on aviation’s connectivity role. Whitaker said Avianca carried 71 million people within the region last year, which the group views as evidence of aviation’s economic and social reach. On the environmental side, fuel remains the main focus, with work centred on operational efficiency, fleet renewal and lower carbon intensity. Avianca has also received Cirium recognition for reducing emissions intensity between 2019 and 2024.

Abra is also weighing lower-carbon-fuel options with partners outside Latin America, aiming to decarbonise without weakening domestic connectivity or regional economics. The group’s message is that sustainability in the region needs to be adapted to local conditions rather than copied from markets with different infrastructure and ecological realities.
