Video: Electra EL2 makes fixed-wing landing at Manhattan heliport

Electra’s hybrid-electric EL2 Goldfinch technology demonstrator has taken off and landed at Downtown Skyport in Lower Manhattan, demonstrating fixed-wing operations from a heliport normally used by helicopters. The two-seat aircraft completed two takeoffs and landings from the East River waterfront site, which has a landing area approximately 300 feet long, supporting Electra’s plan to bring short regional flights closer to urban destinations.

Flown by Electra test pilot Cody Allee, the aircraft went around once to avoid ferry traffic before landing and later performed low-speed manoeuvres over the heliport at about 40 knots. Electra believes the operation was the first landing at the facility by a fixed-wing aircraft without vertical-takeoff capability.

The EL2 uses distributed electric propulsion and blown lift, with electrically driven propellers directing airflow over the wings and large flaps to generate lift at low speeds. Electra says the aircraft can take off and land in as little as 150 feet, potentially allowing operations from existing heliports, parking areas and other constrained sites.

The demonstrator is being used to validate technology for Electra’s planned nine-passenger EL9 regional aircraft. The company’s concept is to connect passengers with city destinations through smaller aviation facilities rather than relying exclusively on conventional airports. CEO Marc Allen described the Manhattan demonstration as an example of how fixed-wing aircraft could expand regional mobility from urban locations.
