American Airlines revenue climbs 19.3% as fuel costs surge

American Airlines Group reported record third-quarter revenue of approximately $16.3 billion, up 19.3% year on year, as strong demand lifted results across geographic markets and cabin classes. Premium-cabin revenue rose 22.9% and main-cabin revenue increased 19.5%, but a sharp rise in fuel prices kept the Fort Worth-based carrier unprofitable. Fuel expense jumped 67.5% to about $4.64 billion.

Total unit revenue increased 14.5%, while domestic passenger unit revenue rose 13.6%. Despite the stronger commercial performance, American posted a GAAP net loss of $269 million, or $0.41 per diluted share, compared with a $114 million loss in the third quarter of 2025. The adjusted net loss was $182 million, or $0.28 per share.

American paid an average of $3.85 per gallon for fuel during the quarter. The additional $1.9 billion fuel burden largely offset the revenue gains, although the adjusted loss was $71 million narrower than a year earlier, pointing to stronger underlying performance.

The airline projects fourth-quarter revenue growth of 19.5% to 22.5%. It also expects average fuel prices of about $4.70 per gallon, based on the 19 October forward fuel curve, and fourth-quarter fuel expense approximately $2.8 billion higher than in the same period last year.
