SATA Handling strike threatens Azores Airlines and SATA Air Açores operations

The SATA Group has activated a contingency plan ahead of a planned strike by SATA Handling ground-services employees at airports across the Azores. The action could disrupt services operated by SATA Air Açores and Azores Airlines between 21 October and 3 November, with possible delays, schedule changes and other operational irregularities. Eligible passengers can rebook affected flights without penalties or fare differences under temporary conditions.

The strike, called by unions SITAVA and SINTAC, is scheduled daily from 07:30 to 10:30 local time from 21 to 27 October, followed by afternoon stoppages from 16:00 to 19:00 between 28 October and 3 November. The unions are opposing the Regional Government of the Azores’ intention to sell 100% of SATA Handling, arguing that the proposed transaction does not provide sufficient guarantees for employees.

The rebooking concession applies to eligible passengers whose flights are affected during the first strike period. New travel dates may be selected between 18 October and 10 November, although the reported measure does not include refunds. SATA is recommending online check-in and travel with cabin baggage where possible to reduce pressure on airport handling services. No confirmed number of cancellations or delays has been provided, and the strike remains subject to possible change or resolution before it begins.
