Hollywood Burbank Airport opens new $1.3 billion passenger terminal

Hollywood Burbank Airport opened its new passenger terminal to arriving and departing travellers on 13 October, replacing an ageing complex with a $1.3 billion, 355,000-square-foot facility. The 14-gate terminal retains the airport’s outdoor aircraft boarding while consolidating ticketing, security screening and baggage reclaim under one roof. Alaska Airlines Flight 3401 to Santa Rosa was the first departure, followed by Southwest Airlines Flight 189 from Las Vegas.

Built on the opposite side of the airfield, the terminal allowed airport operations to continue during construction, which began in 2024. It replaces a roughly 232,000-square-foot complex whose oldest buildings dated from 1930 and is located at a new entrance on Winona Avenue and Hollywood Way.

The project addresses modern safety, seismic and accessibility requirements by moving the passenger facility farther from the runways. Passenger features include expanded TSA screening capacity, digital displays, charging stations, workstation-style seating, retail areas and a single indoor baggage-reclaim hall. A new parking structure provides about 2,000 spaces and 310 electric-vehicle charging ports.

Access arrangements have changed, with revised locations for rideshare pickup, valet parking and rental-car services. Food and beverage operations were not fully established at opening, with none of the 13 concessions operating completely on the first day.
