VINCI launches Lyon Terminal 2 overhaul ahead of 2030 Winter Olympics

VINCI Airports has launched the transformation and extension of Terminal 2 at Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport, with commissioning planned by 2029 ahead of the 2030 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in the French Alps. The project will add 9,500 square metres and modernise 12,000 square metres of existing space to improve passenger processing, aircraft-stand flexibility and connections to Alpine resorts.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by French Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes regional president Fabrice Pannekoucke, Lyon Metropolitan Area president Véronique Sarselli and regional prefect Étienne Guyot. The project is being led by VINCI Airports and the shareholders of Aéroports de Lyon.

Plans include upgraded security screening, improved passenger circulation, new retail and leisure facilities, and enhanced handling of oversized baggage such as skis and bicycles. Energy-efficiency measures will also be introduced, while the bus station will be expanded to accommodate more services serving the Alps.

The terminal work forms part of a prospective investment programme exceeding €380 million over seven years. Full implementation remains conditional on an economic-regulation agreement with the French government expected by spring 2027. The upgraded facility is intended to support Olympic delegations, spectators and other visitors while strengthening Lyon’s role as an international gateway to the Alps.
