Poland signs first contract for US military facility at Wroclaw airport

Poland has signed the first construction contract for a US Air Force air-port-of-debarkation and transshipment facility at Wroclaw-Strachowice Airport. The PLN 750 million project, awarded to PORR Polska, will provide infrastructure for four C-5 Galaxy heavy transport aircraft and three C-130 Hercules aircraft, with the first phase scheduled for completion and military readiness in 2029.

The contract covers five of 20 planned tasks, including two military aircraft aprons, new taxiways, a military fire-brigade building and facilities for the duty airfield technician. The investment is being delivered by the Regional Infrastructure Board in Wroclaw under Poland’s Poland Provided Infrastructure programme, established through the 2020 Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement with the United States.

The expanded military area is intended to increase Poland’s capacity to receive US transport aircraft and support air logistics towards NATO’s eastern flank. Later elements of the wider project are expected to include cargo infrastructure, protected ammunition and explosives facilities, a military passenger terminal, equipment workshops, weapons storage, accommodation and medical facilities. Secondary coverage has also reported plans for a railway connection to Wroclaw Zachodni freight station, enabling military equipment and supplies to move without relying on public roads.

Construction, infrastructure certification and readiness to receive military aircraft are planned for 2029. The remaining elements of the wider development could continue until 2035.
