Reiche stranded in Riyadh after airport attacks

German Economy Minister Katherina Reiche cannot return to Berlin as planned on 12 October after Houthi attacks closed Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport. Reiche was in the Saudi capital for energy and economic conferences. The closure is also disrupting commercial aviation, with Lufthansa Group suspending its Riyadh flights through 16 October while authorities assess alternative travel arrangements.

Reiche and her staff are expected to return safely, but no alternative departure airport or revised arrival date has been confirmed. Logistics for the minister’s return are being coordinated between the relevant ministries and authorities, while other transport options are under review.

The airport was targeted in two attacks, including one involving a Saudi aircraft, according to Saudi authorities. Three Saudi nationals were killed and several people of different nationalities were injured. A later strike reportedly hit a terminal and caused a fire. The Houthi militia claimed responsibility for attacks on the airport.

The disruption has prompted airlines to cancel or suspend Riyadh services. Lufthansa Group carriers are among several international operators that have halted flights to the Saudi capital through 16 October, reflecting the continuing security risks around the airport and Saudi airspace.
