Flydubai FZ1073 probe widens over possible Ben Gurion target

Flydubai’s investigation into flight FZ1073 has widened after reports that the violent cockpit incident on the Dubai-Tel Aviv service may have been aimed at Ben Gurion Airport. The Boeing 737 MAX 8 was diverted to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia on 30 September after a safety incident in the flight deck, with all 172 passengers and crew reported safe.

The airline suspended flights to and from Tel Aviv while authorities continue to examine the case. Early findings pointed to an altercation in the cockpit that injured the captain and first officer, but the motive remained unclear at the time of the airline’s initial update. Later reporting indicated Israeli authorities were examining whether the suspected co-pilot intended to target Ben Gurion, though that claim has not been confirmed as a final conclusion.

The incident has drawn scrutiny of cockpit security, crew response and in-flight threat procedures on one of the region’s most sensitive routes. UAE investigators are working with Israeli and Saudi authorities as the probe continues, with the aircraft and crew at the centre of a case that is now being assessed as a possible unlawful interference event rather than a routine onboard disturbance.
