US Coast Guard halts search for six aboard missing medical transport jet near Nantucket

The US Coast Guard has suspended its search for six people aboard a Gulfstream G100 medical transport aircraft that vanished off Nantucket, Massachusetts, after flying from Bermuda to Boston. Debris from the aircraft was found during the operation, which covered about 66 hours before active search-and-rescue efforts were ended.

The aircraft was operated by Latitude Air Ambulance and was carrying four Canadian nationals and two Bermudians. Contact was lost early on 3 October as the jet approached the Massachusetts coast, prompting a large-scale air-and-sea response involving Coast Guard aircraft and vessels.

With no survivors located, the focus has shifted from rescue to recovery and investigation. Next of kin have been notified, and authorities are expected to examine the circumstances of the accident, including the loss of contact and the debris field found off Nantucket. The case also underscores the operational risks facing transatlantic medical transport flights that depend on close coordination between aviation and maritime search teams.
