Lomé Airport confirms plumbing incident after viral sewage claims

Lomé’s Gnassingbé Eyadéma International Airport was hit by a plumbing incident in the boarding area on 30 September, prompting the operator, Société Aéroportuaire de Lomé-Tokoin (SALT), to counter viral claims that passengers had been splashed with sewage. SALT said the event occurred at 12:50 and was caused by an overflow from a siphon on the floor, while airport operations continued without interruption.

Technical and cleaning teams were deployed immediately to contain the overflow and restore the affected area. Passengers were able to carry on with their activities during the intervention, and SALT reported no physical discomfort or operational disruption. The operator apologised for any visual inconvenience caused to users in the area.

The clarification followed a wave of social media posts portraying a far more serious incident, including claims of a broken pipe or pipe explosion and exposure to waste water. SALT’s account directly rejected that version, and the company did not identify any affected flights or provide further technical detail beyond an apparent blockage upstream. No injuries or delays were reported.
