Mongolia weighs COMAC C919 for MIAT fleet renewal

Mongolia is weighing the COMAC C919 as a possible option for MIAT Mongolian Airlines’ future fleet renewal after transport minister Borkhuu Delgersaikhan met COMAC executives in Shanghai. The talks centred on what would need to be resolved before the Chinese narrowbody could enter service in Mongolia, including certification, safety and performance at the country’s cold-weather and high-altitude airports.

No order, fleet size or delivery timetable has been set. Other issues raised included range, fuel burn, spare parts, maintenance support and crew training, while COMAC indicated it was ready to cooperate on operations, technical support, maintenance and personnel training.

The discussions add to the C919’s gradual push beyond China, coming soon after Air China began scheduled international service with the type on the Beijing-Ulaanbaatar route in August. For Mongolia, any move toward the C919 would still depend on regulatory clearance and on whether the aircraft can meet local operating requirements for MIAT’s network.
