Lufthansa to boost Munich long-haul links to Bengaluru and Johannesburg

Lufthansa will increase long-haul capacity from Munich on services to Bengaluru and Johannesburg in the first quarter of 2027, using Airbus A350-900 aircraft on both routes. The Munich–Bengaluru service will rise from five to seven weekly frequencies, while Munich–Johannesburg will increase from five to six weekly flights, with a brief further uplift to seven weekly services during part of the period.

The adjustments form part of Lufthansa’s wider Munich network planning rather than a one-off seasonal or charter operation. The changes point to firmer demand on two important intercontinental routes linking the German hub with India and southern Africa. Bengaluru remains a key technology and business destination, while Johannesburg is one of Lufthansa’s main African long-haul markets.

The schedule update does not provide a formal commercial rationale beyond the timetable changes, but the deployment of the A350-900 on both routes underlines Munich’s role in Lufthansa’s long-haul operation. The carrier has increasingly centred its premium intercontinental flying at the Bavarian hub, where the A350 family is a core part of the long-haul fleet.
