Redwire and Sophia Space sign MOU to advance orbital data centre infrastructure

Redwire and Sophia Space have signed a memorandum of understanding to develop scalable computing infrastructure in orbit, with the collaboration centred on near-term demonstration missions and longer-term orbital data centre architectures. The agreement, unveiled in Las Vegas, combines Sophia Space’s modular TILE compute architecture with Redwire’s space systems, power, thermal control, integration and avionics capabilities.

The partnership remains at an exploratory stage, with no financial terms, contract value, deployment schedule or mission timeline disclosed. Both companies aim to move orbital computing beyond isolated demonstrations toward repeatable infrastructure that could support orbital data centres.

Sophia Space’s TILE architecture is intended for compute-intensive workloads in the space environment, while Redwire brings deployable space systems, solar power generation and distribution, thermal management and systems engineering to the table. The two firms also plan to pursue selected US government and commercial opportunities, including potential programmes involving DARPA, the Air Force Research Laboratory, the Space Development Agency and the National Reconnaissance Office. The collaboration leaves room for concept development, joint proposals, internal research and development, customer engagement and international market opportunities.
